About the Event
Christian Appalachian Project is an NGO that works to alleviate poverty in eastern Kentucky. They have several programs, including summer camps, food and clothing banks, after school tutoring, elder care and home repair. For more information, check out www.christianapp.org
Last year, Lighthouse was able to participate in their “YouthFest” program. It is a spring break alternative, where youth (14 yrs and up) spend their spring break doing home repairs in one of the poorest areas in the country.
For this coming year, we would like to give the opportunity for parents and youth in Lighthouse to serve together in Kentucky! We are scheduled to leave on Sunday April 13th, and return on Thursday April 17th. To make this work, We need parents to commit to coming on the trip. We will drive personal vehicles to get there and to the job sites. A vehicle that can hold 6-7 people would be ideal. Everyone over 18 will need a background check.
FAQs:
-Can my student attend if a parent can’t go? Yes! CAP does have a strict adult/student ratio. As long as we have 2 adults for every 5 students. I want to be as inclusive as possible.
-Where would we stay in Kentucky? CAP has a mission center in Martin, Ky – The Louis T Foley Mission Center. It’s about a 7-hour drive from Frederick.
-Will I have to sleep on the floor? NO! The mission center has bunk rooms with real beds (even Tempur-Pedic mattresses), heat/AC, bathrooms with showers… It is a really comfortable place to stay.
-What do we eat? CAP provides all meals while we are there. It is included in the cost of the trip.
-What is the cost? $225 per person, for both adults and students. I will also ask every student to pay an additional $25 to help defer the cost of gas. You would need money to buy meals on the road during the travel days. Please, let me know if cost is an obstacle.
-What type of work will we be doing? During past experiences, we have worked building porches and access ramps for older people that have mobility issues. CAP provides all the necessary building materials and tools; we provide the labor. If you are not comfortable working outside, there are opportunities to help in the kitchen at the mission center.
-What is the age cut-off? Students must be at least 14 years old. That is a CAP rule.
-We will have 2-3 pre-trip meetings in February/March before the trip. Schedule for the meetings is TBD.
