WHAT IS IT?
It is going public! It’s saying, “I’m not ashamed to let the world know that Jesus is my Lord, my Savior, my God, and my King.” Baptism identifies you with Jesus, with all Christ-followers, and with the local church, where Christians experience support, community and accountability.
Baptism is a way for you to let others know that you are a follower of Jesus. Jesus said “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except by Me.” (John 14:6) The Bible also says that our salvation has nothing to do with the good things we do, but only comes through the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8 – 9).
Baptism doesn’t save you. That comes through Jesus. It is a way to let others know you have trusted Jesus as the Leader and Forgiver of your life … to simply “go public.”
WHY BE BAPTIZED?
The simple answer is this: Because Jesus said so. Living the Christian life is consistently recognizing the authority of Christ over our lives.
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’” Matthew 28:18-19
Jesus said that the first step that a follower of Jesus is to take is Baptism. And when we are baptized, we are acting in obedience, recognizing his authority and submitting to it.
WHAT ABOUT RE-BAPTISM?
For a person who was baptized as an infant, either because of their parents’ or their church’s religious beliefs, we encourage
re-baptism. Again, this is because we believe baptism is a personal choice that follows a personal faith.
We also believe that, just as a commitment to Christ is followed by baptism, so also a re-commitment to Christ can be followed by re-baptism. If a person has wandered in their relationship with Jesus, and has renewed their commitment to Him, we believe that being re-baptized is a great way to demonstrate that.
